First scientific results from the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS)

چکیده
The Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) was successfully launched on 25 January 1983 and terminated science data acquisition on 22 November 1983. The in -orbit performance of the telescope has been described in two previous papers in these proceedings.1'2 A previous description of very preliminary scientific results from the mission has been given in these proceedings3, while far more extensive reports have been given elsewhere415. In this paper we will summarize some of the results obtained to date from the IRAS data. The work to date has sampled only a small fraction of the IRAS data; the study of the data from the IRAS survey will continue for many years to come.

Automated Classification of 2000 Bright IRAS Sources
An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) scheme has been employed that uses a supervised back-propagation algorithm to classify 2000 bright sources from the Calgary database of IRAS (Infrared Astronomical Satellite) spectra in the region 8μm to 23μm. The database has been classified into 17 predefined classes based on the spectral morphology. We have been able to classify over 80 percent of the sourc...

R. H. White Jet Propulsion Laboratory California Institute of Technology Pasadena, California 91109 Abstract. The Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS)* has completed an unbiased all -sky survey at wavelengths from 10 to 100 μm. The design and performance of the focal plane array is described with emphasis on in -orbit measurements of the sensitivity and stability. In the four broad spectral b...
متن کاملParallelization and Algorithmic Enhancements of High Resolution Iras Image Construction
The Infrared Astronomical Satellite carried out a nearly complete survey of the infrared sky, and the survey data are important for the study of many astrophysical phenomena. However, many data sets at other wavelengths have higher resolutions than that of the co-added IRAS maps, and high resolution IRAS images are strongly desired both for their own information content and their usefulness in ...

متن کاملA Study of Quasar Absorption Line Systems with IRAS
A survey of quasar absorbers was conducted using the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) database. Quasars with known intervening absorption-line systems and broad absorption line (BAL) QSOs were selected primarily from the Junkkarinen, Hewitt & Burbidge catalog (1991). Of the 570 quasars with IRAS data, 52 showed 3 or better detections in at least one band in SCANPI analysis. The origin of ...
